Two performances from September, 2023: CalArts' Experiments in Electronic Sound Festival 2023 in Los Angeles and Floating Transmissions radio sound art festival, Hamburg, Germany. Two separate pieces, linked by considerations of medium and transmission.
// Foundation
Recorded live at CalArts' inaugural Experiments in Electronic Sound Festival on September 28, 2023.
"Foundation" uses an 18" square slab of poured concrete with a contact mic embedded in the center as the only source of sound for the piece. The signal is then mangled, looped, fed back, processed, and glitched to produce the soundscape. A variety of implements are used to strike, rub, and vibrate the concrete, creating an array of sounds.
// Ex Undis, Cognito
Recorded live aboard the MS Stubnitz, Hamburg, DE, on September 2nd, 2023, as part of the opening night of Floating Transmissions, a week-long radio sound art festival.
"From the waves, knowledge". A piece crafted through a combination of the Moog Subharmonicon and recordings of radio waves received by a geostationary satellite, primarily of a shipping weather report for vessels on the oceans below. I am captivated by these mangled recordings of radio waves escaping Earth's atmosphere and finding a shipping weather report recorded from space felt apt in Hamburg, one of the busiest ports in the world.
