I wanted to explore the notion of “time-lapse” and how it might apply to the audio domain. I was well-acquainted with time-lapse photography: the techniques, its strengths, etc. But I puzzled over what the equivalent might be in audio. What experience could time-lapse field recordings compress? What different methods could I use to compress time?

I took the concepts of shutter speed and interval timing from photography and correlated them to “windows” and “intervals”: a “window” is simply a slice of audio of a given duration, the “interval” is the amount of time between slices. I used Max/MSP to create a series of algorithmic processes by which to slice durational audio; each track uses one (or more) of these processes to compress the experience of time in the recording.
